Halekulani

Halekulani, the “House Befitting Heaven”, is one of the original hotels of Waikīkī and still its most gracious. Set right on the beach with Diamond Head in view, it is an oasis of calm in the middle of Honolulu, known for understated elegance and for service that seems to anticipate what you need before you ask.

Following a full restoration, the hotel feels fresh while keeping everything that made it famous: the historic main building, the old kiawe tree beside the ocean and the pool with its enormous orchid mosaic. For couples who want the best of Waikīkī without the bustle, there is nowhere quite like it.

Halekulani has 453 rooms and suites, most of them looking out to the ocean. Interiors follow the hotel’s signature “seven shades of white”, a quiet palette of neutral tones chosen so that the view, rather than the décor, takes centre stage. Rooms range from garden and poolside settings to high floors facing the ocean and Diamond Head, each with a private lanai and complimentary Wi-Fi.

Junior Suites add a sitting area and two private lanais, while One and Two Bedroom Suites have separate living and dining spaces, walk-in closets and extra-large bathrooms with deep soaking tubs. For a honeymoon, we recommend:

• Ocean view or ocean front room – A high floor facing Diamond Head, for sunrise and sunset from your own lanai.

• Premier Suites – Six one-of-a-kind suites, each with its own character and views of Waikīkī Beach and Diamond Head.

Dining is one of the great pleasures of a stay at Halekulani. Orchids, set beside the ocean, serves coastal Italian cuisine built on local seafood and island produce, and is known for its Sunday brunch. House Without A Key is the hotel’s open-air gathering place, where tropical drinks and light dishes are served beneath the kiawe tree to Hawaiian music and hula every evening at sunset. Beside the pool, Earl’s pours signature mai tais and cocktails by the sea.

After dark, Lewers Lounge offers classic cocktails and small plates with live jazz, and L’Aperitif, the cocktail bar at La Mer, pairs French-inspired cocktails with small culinary accompaniments. Afternoon tea is served on the Veranda. Across the street at sister hotel Halepuna Waikiki, guests will also find Halekulani Bakery for artisan breads and pastries, the seafood restaurant UMI by Vikram Garg, and Terns for an evening meal.

For a special honeymoon evening, we recommend:

• La Mer – Halekulani’s celebrated fine dining restaurant, serving French-inspired cuisine with Hawaiian influences in an elegant room above the ocean. Elegant evening attire is required.

Life at Halekulani centres on its heated oceanfront pool, where a Cattleya orchid made of 1.2 million glass tiles shimmers beneath the water and attendants look after you from early morning until sunset. Steps away, the hotel’s small stretch of Waikīkī Beach offers surf instruction and daily surf and paddleboard demonstrations. There is a complimentary fitness studio overlooking the pool and ocean, with group fitness classes for all levels.

Halekulani is also a wonderful base for exploring the culture of Oʻahu. Through its “For You, Everything” programme, guests receive complimentary admission to some of Honolulu’s finest cultural institutions, including Bishop Museum, the Honolulu Museum of Art, ʻIolani Palace, the only royal palace on U.S. soil, and Mānoa Heritage Center. The concierge can also arrange art and architecture tours of the hotel, private surf lessons and outings across the island.

Spa

The recently remodelled SpaHalekulani takes its inspiration from Kawehewehe, the healing waters in front of the hotel where Hawaiians once came to be restored. Treatments blend Polynesian healing traditions and island botanicals with modern techniques, and the salon offers hair services, manicures, pedicures and a Japanese-style head spa.

Weddings
