Best Time to Visit Japan: A Month-by-Month Guide
Japan is one of those rare destinations that can feel completely different depending on when you visit. Spring brings the famous cherry blossoms, summer is filled with festivals and fireworks, autumn transforms temples and gardens with brilliant red and gold foliage, and winter brings snow-covered landscapes, hot springs, and some of the world’s best skiing.
So, when is the best time to visit Japan?
For most first-time visitors and honeymooners, spring and autumn are our favorite seasons, particularly April, October, and November. The temperatures are generally comfortable for sightseeing, and Japan is exceptionally beautiful during both seasons.
However, there’s an important tradeoff: the most beautiful and popular times can also mean more visitors and higher hotel prices.
The best month for your trip really depends on what you’d most like to experience.
Quick Answer: When Is the Best Time to Visit Japan?
For comfortable weather and sightseeing, consider:
March through May
Cherry blossoms, spring flowers, and mild weather.
October through November
Comfortable temperatures and spectacular autumn colors.
For honeymooners who aren’t specifically traveling for cherry blossoms, October and November are particularly appealing. The weather is generally pleasant for exploring cities such as Tokyo and Kyoto, and the autumn scenery can be every bit as beautiful as Japan’s famous spring blossoms.
January
January is cold, but it’s also a wonderful time to experience a quieter side of Japan.
Tokyo and Kyoto can be crisp and chilly, while northern Japan becomes a winter wonderland. This is prime season for skiing in destinations such as Hokkaido and the Japanese Alps.
Winter is also perfect for experiencing an onsen, Japan’s traditional hot springs.
Best for: Skiing, snow scenery, hot springs, and winter honeymoons.
February
February remains cold but offers beautiful winter scenery and generally fewer tourists in many of Japan’s major sightseeing destinations.
This can be an excellent month for couples who don’t mind bundling up and would rather avoid the larger spring crowds.
Best for: Winter scenery, skiing, hot springs, and fewer crowds.
March
March marks the beginning of one of Japan’s most anticipated seasons.
Temperatures begin warming, and cherry blossoms start appearing in warmer parts of the country. Exact bloom dates vary every year and by region, so anyone planning specifically around the blossoms should remain somewhat flexible.
By late March, excitement surrounding sakura season is in full swing.
Best for: Early cherry blossoms and spring sightseeing.
April
April is arguably Japan’s most famous travel month.
Cherry blossoms typically create beautiful displays across many popular areas, and spring temperatures are ideal for walking through cities, gardens, temples, and historic neighborhoods.
The downside?
Everyone else knows how beautiful April is, too.
Popular destinations such as Kyoto can become extremely busy, and hotels may command premium prices during peak cherry blossom periods.
For couples who have always dreamed of a Japan honeymoon during cherry blossom season, however, the experience can absolutely be worth planning well in advance.
Best for: Cherry blossoms, romantic scenery, and first-time visitors.
May
May is one of my favorite months for Japan.
Spring weather continues, gardens are beautifully green, and temperatures are generally comfortable.
There is one important consideration: Golden Week, a collection of Japanese holidays that typically falls from late April into early May. Domestic travel increases dramatically during this period, so I prefer traveling later in May whenever possible.
Best for: Excellent weather and sightseeing—especially after Golden Week.
June
June typically brings Japan’s rainy season to much of the country.
That doesn’t necessarily mean constant rain. Travelers often experience a mixture of cloudy skies, showers, and periods of sunshine.
The advantage is that June can be quieter than peak spring travel, and Japan’s gardens are beautifully lush.
Hydrangeas are also in bloom, creating gorgeous displays in temples and gardens.
Best for: Fewer crowds, lush gardens, and travelers comfortable carrying an umbrella.
July
July becomes increasingly hot and humid, particularly in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka.
But summer also brings something special: festival season.
Traditional celebrations, outdoor events, and spectacular fireworks displays make summer an exciting time to experience Japanese culture.
Best for: Festivals, fireworks, and travelers who don’t mind heat.
August
August is typically one of Japan’s hottest and most humid months.
It’s also an exciting cultural month filled with festivals and celebrations.
Travelers should also be aware that tropical storms and typhoons are more likely during late summer and early autumn, although they certainly don’t affect every trip.
If heat and humidity aren’t your friends, I’d choose another month.
Best for: Festivals and summer celebrations.
September
September begins the transition toward autumn, although temperatures can remain quite warm early in the month.
This is also still part of Japan’s primary typhoon season, so some flexibility is helpful.
By later September, cooler temperatures begin appearing, particularly in northern Japan and mountainous regions.
Best for: Travelers who want to visit between the summer and peak autumn seasons.
October
October is one of our favorite months to visit Japan.
Summer’s humidity begins disappearing, temperatures become much more comfortable, and autumn foliage starts appearing in northern and higher-elevation areas.
It’s a wonderful month for exploring Tokyo, Kyoto, the Japanese countryside, and mountain destinations.
For honeymooners, October offers an excellent combination of beautiful weather, seasonal scenery, fantastic food, and romantic experiences without having to plan around the unpredictable timing of cherry blossoms.
Best for: Honeymooners, comfortable weather, sightseeing, and early fall foliage.
November
November may be the best overall month for many first-time visitors.
Autumn colors spread through much of the country, turning temple gardens, parks, mountains, and historic neighborhoods brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold.
Kyoto is particularly beautiful during fall foliage season, although popular locations can become busy.
The cooler temperatures also make long sightseeing days much more enjoyable.
Best for: Fall foliage, honeymooners, photography, and sightseeing.
December
December brings cooler weather and the beginning of winter.
Early December can be an especially interesting time to visit because some areas may still have late autumn colors while winter illuminations begin appearing in cities.
Later in the month, Japan transitions into its important New Year holiday period, which can affect transportation and business hours.
Best for: Winter illuminations, cooler weather, and holiday atmosphere.
Best Time to Visit Japan for Cherry Blossoms
Cherry blossom season generally progresses from south to north, rather than occurring everywhere at once.
In many of the destinations popular with first-time visitors, the season typically falls around late March into April, but nature doesn’t follow a guaranteed calendar. Bloom timing changes from year to year based on weather.
If seeing the cherry blossoms is your number-one priority, build some flexibility into your itinerary and avoid planning your entire trip around a single predicted bloom date.
Best Time to Visit Japan for Fall Colors
Japan’s fall foliage season is much longer than many travelers realize.
Colors begin appearing earlier in northern Japan and at higher elevations before gradually moving south. For many popular destinations in central Japan, November into early December can offer spectacular autumn scenery.
I think fall is sometimes overlooked by travelers who immediately associate Japan with cherry blossoms. For honeymooners, autumn can be every bit as romantic—and often easier to plan.
When Is Japan Least Expensive?
There isn’t one universally inexpensive month because prices vary by destination and events, but travelers often find better value during quieter periods such as:
- Mid-January through February, outside ski destinations
- June during the rainy season
- Portions of September
Try to avoid major Japanese holiday periods if value is important, particularly Golden Week around late April and early May.
Cherry blossom season and peak fall foliage periods can also bring strong demand and higher hotel rates in popular destinations.
Best Time to Visit Japan for a Honeymoon
For most honeymoon couples, we’d narrow the choices to:
April – Choose this if experiencing Japan beneath the cherry blossoms is part of your dream.
May – Beautiful spring weather without quite as much emphasis on chasing blossom dates.
October – One of our favorites for comfortable temperatures and a wonderful overall experience.
November – Our top choice for couples who love autumn scenery, temples, gardens, food, and cooler sightseeing weather.
There’s no wrong answer, but if we were choosing purely on the combination of weather, romance, scenery, and overall experience, we’d give October and November a slight edge.

Don’t try to choose your Japan travel dates based solely on cherry blossoms.
They’re spectacular, but Japan has so much more to offer. Autumn foliage can be equally breathtaking, and October and November are wonderful months for honeymooners who want comfortable weather for exploring Tokyo, Kyoto, and beyond.
If cherry blossoms are an absolute must, plan early—but remember that bloom dates can never be guaranteed. Mother Nature gets the final say!
