10 Unforgettable Experiences in Japan
Japan is one of those destinations where some of your favorite memories may come from experiences you never expected.
Of course you’ll want to see Tokyo, explore Kyoto’s temples, and perhaps catch a glimpse of Mt. Fuji. But what makes Japan truly unforgettable are the experiences in between—the meals, traditions, scenery, and little surprises that make you feel as though you’ve stepped into another world.
Here are 10 experiences we think deserve a place on your Japan wish list.
1. Stay in a Traditional Ryokan
Spending at least one night in a traditional Japanese ryokan is one of our favorite ways to experience Japan.
Depending on the property, you may sleep in a tatami-style room, wear a yukata, enjoy beautifully prepared multi-course meals, and experience Japan’s famous hospitality.
For honeymooners, consider choosing a ryokan with a private onsen so you can enjoy the hot springs together in complete privacy.
2. Experience Tokyo After Dark
Tokyo is impressive during the day, but the city becomes even more exciting after sunset.
Explore the lights of Shibuya and Shinjuku, enjoy cocktails from a rooftop bar, discover a tiny restaurant tucked into a narrow alley, or simply take in the enormous illuminated skyline.
For couples, we’d recommend including at least one special dinner or evening with a spectacular city view.
3. Wander Through Kyoto's Temples and Traditional Neighborhoods
Kyoto offers a Japan many travelers have imagined before they ever arrive.
Visit peaceful temple gardens, walk beneath thousands of red torii gates at Fushimi Inari, explore Gion, or get up early and enjoy the quiet streets before the day’s crowds arrive.
Spring cherry blossoms and autumn foliage make Kyoto especially beautiful, but its historic atmosphere is wonderful throughout the year.
4. See Mt. Fuji
There’s something special about seeing Mt. Fuji for the first time.
Depending on your itinerary, you might view it from Hakone, the Fuji Five Lakes region, or even from the Shinkansen on a clear day.
Because clouds can hide the mountain completely, seeing Fuji is never guaranteed—which somehow makes the moment it appears even more memorable.
5. Experience Luxury Glamping Near Mt. Fuji
For something completely different, add a luxury glamping experience to your itinerary.
Around the Mt. Fuji and Fuji Five Lakes region, upscale glamping properties combine dramatic natural scenery with comforts you wouldn’t normally associate with camping.
Think comfortable private accommodations, beautiful mountain views, outdoor dining, fire pits, and perhaps even private baths or elevated resort-style amenities.
For honeymooners, this can be a wonderful contrast to Tokyo and Kyoto: one night surrounded by nature, but without giving up comfort.
6. Ride the Shinkansen
Transportation doesn’t usually make a list of unforgettable vacation experiences—but Japan’s Shinkansen bullet train absolutely deserves a spot.
Watching the countryside race past while traveling smoothly between Tokyo and Kyoto is part of the Japan experience.
Pick up an ekiben (a beautifully packaged train-station meal), settle into your seat, and enjoy the journey.
And if the weather is clear, keep an eye out for Mt. Fuji.
7. Eat Your Way Through Japan
Japan is a destination where food becomes part of the adventure.
Try sushi in Tokyo, ramen from a tiny neighborhood restaurant, tempura, yakitori, udon, wagyu beef, and matcha desserts in Kyoto.
Visit markets and department-store food halls, and don’t overlook casual restaurants. Some of the meals you remember most may be the simplest ones.
For serious food lovers, a guided food tour early in the trip can also be a great introduction to Japanese cuisine.
8. Experience a Japanese Tea Ceremony
A traditional tea ceremony offers a quieter look into Japanese culture.
The deliberate movements, beautiful surroundings, matcha preparation, and attention to detail offer a fascinating contrast to Japan’s fast-paced cities.
Kyoto is an especially wonderful place to experience this tradition.
9. Visit Hiroshima and Miyajima
For travelers with enough time, Hiroshima and nearby Miyajima add an entirely different dimension to a Japan itinerary.
Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park and museum provide an important and moving historical experience.
Nearby Miyajima is peaceful and scenic, with temples, walking trails, and the famous Itsukushima Shrine.
Together they create one of the most meaningful day-and-a-half or two-day additions to a longer Japan itinerary.
10. Leave Time to Get a Little Lost
Japan rewards curiosity.
Some of our favorite travel moments aren’t necessarily the attractions listed in guidebooks.
Walk down an interesting side street.
Step into a restaurant where you aren’t completely sure what to order.
Explore a neighborhood market.
Visit the little temple you happen to pass.
Stop for something delicious simply because it looks good.
A carefully planned itinerary is important—but leaving a little space for discovery makes Japan much more memorable.
Our Travel Tip ✈️
Build one unexpected experience into your Japan itinerary.
For honeymooners, that might be a private onsen at a beautiful ryokan, a luxury glamping night overlooking Mt. Fuji, an exceptional tasting-menu dinner in Tokyo, or even an extra night somewhere simply because you love it.
Japan is a destination where contrast is part of the magic. Pair the bright lights of Tokyo with the quiet of a mountain retreat, and modern luxury with centuries-old traditions.
Those contrasts are often what travelers remember most.
