Hoping to have the easiest route coming home from outside of the US? Then we recommend that you plan a trip around airports that offer preclearance.
Where Preclearance is Available
Currently preclearance is offered in 15 locations within 6 countries… They include:
- Ireland: Dublin & Shannon
- Aruba
- The Bahamas: Freeport & Nassau
- Bermuda
- United Arab Emirates: Abu Dhabi
- Canada: Calgary, Toronto, Edmonton, Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Vancouver and Winnipeg
What Preclearance Means to You
Preclearance benefits to the United States include assistance in identifying terrorists, criminal and other national security threats prior to boarding a US-bound aircraft. It also enables the traveler to be precleared prior to boarding the plane. This allows an additional level of security to travelers.
Preclearance also has the potential to increase capacity and create growth opportunities for airports as well as airlines, improving passenger experience. It allows a higher capacity for incoming flights into US airports. It means faster connections and ease of arriving home to a crowded arrival customs hall when there are multiple aircraft landing at similar times.
There are plans to expand US Preclearance to Stockholm, Sweden and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
We Always Look For Preclearance Opportunities for Our Clients
As your travel advisor we take your travel plans very seriously, and when there are shorter connection times we try and make sure that you will be able to make your next flight without delay or stress. We are available to give you all of the options (which most airlines do not give) and take care of any changes that need to be made.
Our Personal Experience with Preclearance
On one of our own recent trips to Ireland, we were able to not only use Preclearance in Dublin, but they also have lines for those of us with Global Entry. This enabled us to essentially “skip the line” and then go to the gate with time to spare. The flight out of Dublin was unfortunately delayed which left us with 30 minutes to connect in New York’s JFK airport. We were traveling with a person with a disability which required us to wait for a wheelchair to be brought to the plane. Even with the added stress, it took us 15 minutes to get to our next gate at JFK airport, where they were just beginning the boarding process on our next flight. Being able to go through preclearance in Dublin not only saved us time, it allowed us to make our connection to the West Coast with time to spare.
We had to make the decision whether to reschedule our party on the next available flight (the next day) or to chance getting delayed at JFK for the night. Knowing that we were going to clear customs in Dublin, it made the decision an easy one. Had we been flying out of another airport in Europe, we would have opted to reschedule for the next day. We would have had less than 45 minutes to clear US customs and getting to our next flights would have been next to impossible!
We Still Recommend Purchasing Travel Insurance
This leads to the fact that we always recommend travel insurance, and purchase it on our own travels. Had we needed to spend another night in Dublin or elsewhere, our hotel stay would have been covered along with meals and incidentals (each policy has different limits on what they allow per day for delay).
