The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort
- Hawai'i Island – Kohala Coast / Hapuna
Situated on the sunny Kohala Coast, The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort has defined Island of Hawaiʻi luxury since it opened in 1994. As the second phase in Laurance Rockefeller’s creation of Mauna Kea Resort, the property shares 1,839 acres of oceanfront paradise with the legendary Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. Set into the bluffs above Hāpuna Beach, one of the most celebrated beaches in America, the resort has a flowing, contemporary Hawaiian style, refreshed in a major renovation, where guests experience the true essence of rejuvenation.
A predominant feature of Hapuna is the presence of a series of underground springs. In ancient times, during seasons of heavy rainfall these springs would bubble to the surface creating natural artesian fountains. The resultant streams would provide a source of respite and renewal for travelers along the otherwise dry and barren Kohala Coast. Thus the area was named “Hapuna” or “Spring of Life” in the Hawaiian language.
Set on 32 oceanfront acres, The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort has 249 spacious guest rooms and suites. Every one faces the ocean, with the long, inviting sweep of Hāpuna Beach visible from each private lanai. Rooms have a soft, tropical style and the signature Westin Heavenly Bed, along with a refrigerator, a safe, robes and slippers, and a coffee maker with Kona coffee replenished daily.
Suites add a separate living area and wet bar. Arriving here feels like coming home, even if you have never been before, thanks to a warm and caring staff, many of whom have welcomed the same returning guests year after year.
Overlooking the white sands of Hāpuna Beach, The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort takes a fresh, garden-to-table approach to dining. Herbs, produce and even honey come from the resort’s own on-site garden and beehives, and menus are designed to leave you feeling as good as the view looks.
The day starts at Ikena Landing, an open-air restaurant with a wide ocean outlook, serving à la carte dishes and a breakfast buffet of local fruits and fresh juices. Naupaka Beach Grill, just steps from the beach and pool, is the casual choice for salads, sandwiches and pupu at lunchtime. Piko Coffee + Bar in the lobby pours 100% Kona coffee by day and cocktails by evening, with light bites and grab-and-go options.
For dinner, we recommend:
• Meridia – The resort’s signature restaurant, with a seasonal menu inspired by the Mediterranean and made with the island’s bounty, including a charcuterie and crudo bar, house-made breads and al fresco seating at sunset.
On the Kohala Coast, the sun shines almost all year round. You can be busy from morning until night or simply relax on the long white sands of Hāpuna Beach, which is frequently ranked among America’s best beaches. A sheltered cove nearby has clear, calm water where sea turtles often drop in, making it the perfect place for swimmers and snorkellers to explore.
The resort has a family pool and whirlpools, a fitness centre and Hapuna Spa, which offers massages, facials and body treatments. Golfers can play the Hapuna Golf Course and also have privileges at the neighbouring Mauna Kea Golf Course. With skies this clear, the Kohala Coast is also one of the best places in Hawaii for stargazing.
For honeymooners, we recommend:
• Adults-only infinity pool – A quiet pool reserved for adults, looking straight out over Hāpuna Beach and the sunset.
