Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort is one of Maui’s great beachfront resorts, set on 40 acres of tropical gardens that slope gently down to the sand of Wailea Beach. It is known for its extraordinary pools, its open-air lobby filled with sculpture and what the resort describes as Hawaiʻi’s largest private art collection.

The resort has recently completed the most extensive renovation in its history, with every guest room and suite refreshed, a new spa and a new collection of restaurants. The result feels lighter and more contemporary while keeping the grand scale and sunset views that have always made it a favourite for honeymoons.

All of the resort’s guest rooms and suites have been refreshed in a calm, contemporary island style. Rooms begin at a generous 640 square feet, each with a private lanai looking over the gardens, the terraces or the ocean, a marble bathroom with a deep soaking tub and separate glass shower, a sitting area and a Nespresso machine. Suites add a separate living room, and the three-bedroom Hoʻolei Villas, in a gated hillside community across the street, come with full kitchens, their own pool and a dedicated concierge.

• Napua – Club-level rooms and suites on the resort’s private upper floors, with a dedicated concierge and lounge access for continental breakfast, midday snacks, evening hors d’oeuvres and cocktails.

Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort has become one of the most exciting places to eat in Wailea. Olivine serves coastal Italian cooking beside the ocean, with handmade pastas and seasonal dishes that make the most of Hawaiian ingredients, and Nobu Grand Wailea Maui brings the celebrated Japanese restaurant’s signature dishes and sushi to indoor and outdoor rooms with ocean views. In the open-air lobby, Botero Lounge pours specialty cocktails to live local music among bronze sculptures by Fernando Botero.

Days are easy and casual. Loulu is a wellness-minded market café, Wailea Surf Haus is a poolside walk-up for tropical drinks and light lunches, and Grotto Bar serves cocktails and light bites beside the waterfalls of the activity pool. The Aloha Trick Pony food truck turns out street-style tacos, Haleakalā Shave Ice is the afternoon treat, and The Lūʻau at Grand Wailea shares Hawaiian ceremony, music and traditional dishes such as kālua pig, poke and poi. In-room dining is also available.

For a special honeymoon dinner, we recommend:

• Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa – The resort’s signature seafood restaurant, set over a beachfront lagoon, with inventive cocktails and a table timed for sunset.

The pools are the heart of the resort. The Wailea Canyon Activity Pool is made up of nine pools on six levels, linked by a lazy river and seven waterslides, with waterfalls, caves, a rope swing, whirlpools and a swim-up bar. For quieter days, the Hibiscus Serenity Pool is reserved for adults, with two whirlpools and private cabanas, and Wailea Beach is just steps away.

From the beach you can join a guided outrigger canoe paddle along the Wailea coast, rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard, or take an introductory snorkel and scuba lesson in the resort’s own dive pool. There are hula and ʻukulele lessons, tours with the resort’s cultural ambassador, beach yoga and other fitness classes, a state-of-the-art fitness centre and beach cruiser bikes for exploring Wailea. Golfers have the three courses of Wailea Golf Club nearby.

Spa

Kilolani Spa, which has replaced Spa Grande, is a wellness destination guided by the Hawaiian moon calendar. Its 40 treatment rooms include rooms for couples, and the open-air Hydrotherapy Gardens offer a circuit of heating, cooling and bathing experiences, alongside a hammam, infrared saunas and a salt water vitality pool. We recommend arriving early for your treatment to enjoy the gardens together.

Children

Children of any age are welcome at the resort, and the Grand Wailea Keiki Club offers crafts, games and cultural workshops for younger guests.
