Huahine is rich in living traditions. More has been done on this island to restore the archaeological sites than anywhere else in French Polynesia. The culturally and historically minded will want to take an excursion to the northeast coast village of Maeva, the ancient capital of Huahine. Maeva is a rich and exciting archeological site where the remains of prehistoric villages and ancient stone temples, “Marae”, lend clues to a civilization that existed in Polynesia at least 1000 years ago.
