Le Tikehau by Pearl Resorts

Tikehau is often called one of the most beautiful atolls in Polynesia: a graceful ring of small islets around a wide, calm lagoon, less than an hour’s flight from Tahiti. Le Tikehau by Pearl Resorts has a private islet of its own here, motu Tianoa, a 15-minute boat ride from the village.

Set on pink sand and fringed with coconut palms, the resort is small, quiet and wonderfully remote. Bungalows stand on the beach and over the lagoon, and the pace of the day is set by the light on the water.

All bungalows and suites are built in true Polynesian style under pandanus roofs, with air conditioning, Wi-Fi, a minibar, coffee and tea facilities and a private deck.

The Beach Bungalows (592 sq. ft.) sit on the sand with a private garden and an indoor-outdoor bathroom. The Overwater Bungalows stand over the water along the first pontoon, with a glass floor panel for watching the fish below. For a honeymoon, we recommend:

•  Overwater Suite – Almost twice the size at 1,001 sq. ft., with a living room, a large bathtub, direct lagoon access and a sunrise or sunset view.

•  Horizon Overwater Suite – Alone at the very end of the pontoon, with a 180-degree view of the sunset.

For the ultimate stay, the Royal Beach Villa with Pool has two bedrooms, each with an outdoor bathtub, and a large private pool on its own stretch of beach.

Poreho Restaurant, the resort’s main restaurant, overlooks the lagoon and serves Polynesian and European cuisine at breakfast, lunch and dinner. In the evening, Te Reka Ika is a beachside seafood restaurant where the tables are set on the sand and the menu showcases freshly caught fish. Reservations are required.

Kaina Bar serves cocktails through the day and into the evening. For a morning to remember, order the Canoe Breakfast, delivered to your bungalow by outrigger canoe. The concierge can also arrange a private dinner on the beach at the water’s edge.

The resort has an outdoor swimming pool, a fitness center and an activities desk. Kayaks, paddleboards and snorkeling gear are free to use, and the lagoon begins at your doorstep.

Further afield, you can snorkel and dive in the lagoon, cruise to nearby motu, go birdwatching on Bird Island, join a fishing trip or visit the village. Sunset cruises and private picnics on a deserted pink-sand islet are two honeymoon favorites.
