How Many Days Do You Need in Tahiti & French Polynesia?
One of the most common questions I receive is, “How many days should we spend in Tahiti?”
The answer depends on how much of French Polynesia you’d like to experience, but for most travelers—especially honeymooners—I recommend 8 to 10 nights. Since you’re traveling such a long distance to reach this incredible part of the South Pacific, it’s worth giving yourself enough time to truly relax and enjoy more than one island.
The Minimum Stay
If time is limited, I’d suggest 6–7 nights.
A week allows you to experience the beauty of French Polynesia without feeling overly rushed. I recommend spending your time on two islands rather than trying to fit in several.
A great itinerary would be:
- 1 night in Tahiti
- 2 nights in Moorea
- 3–4 nights in Bora Bora
This gives you a wonderful introduction to French Polynesia while still allowing time to relax.
If You Have More Time
If you’re fortunate enough to have 10–14 nights, consider adding another island such as Taha’a or Rangiroa.
This allows you to experience a quieter side of French Polynesia while avoiding the feeling of constantly packing and moving.
Should You Stay on Just One Island?
While it’s certainly possible to spend your entire vacation in Bora Bora, I generally recommend visiting at least two islands.
Each island offers a different experience:
- Tahiti introduces you to Polynesian culture.
- Moorea offers lush mountains and outdoor adventures.
- Bora Bora delivers the unforgettable luxury and romance many couples dream about.
Together, they create a much more complete French Polynesia experience.
The Ideal Itinerary
For most couples, 8–10 nights is the sweet spot.
A popular honeymoon itinerary looks like this:
- 1 night in Tahiti
- 3 nights in Moorea
- 4–5 nights in Bora Bora
This pace lets you experience the unique personality of each island while still enjoying plenty of downtime.
Bora Bora deserves the longest stay, as it’s home to the iconic overwater bungalows, stunning lagoon excursions, and some of the most romantic resorts in the world.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is trying to visit too many islands in one trip. Every transfer takes time, and part of the magic of French Polynesia is slowing down. I’d much rather see you spend an extra night enjoying your overwater bungalow in Bora Bora than rushing to squeeze in another island.
