The island’s dramatic caldera, cliffside villages and extraordinary sunsets have made it one of the world’s most famous honeymoon destinations.

For couples looking for romance, Santorini offers exceptional boutique hotels, private terraces, plunge pools, wineries and restaurants overlooking the Aegean.

But Santorini isn’t really about having the best beaches in Greece. We recommend it primarily for the scenery, atmosphere and unique accommodations.

A few nights here can be magical—particularly when combined with an island that offers a completely different experience.

Mykonos: For Energy, Style and Nightlife

Mykonos is ideal for couples who want their honeymoon to have some energy.

Think stylish hotels, beautiful beaches, sophisticated restaurants, beach clubs and nightlife.

It’s glamorous, social and lively, particularly during the summer.

For some honeymooners, that’s exactly what they want. Others envision something quieter and more intimate.

If you’re not interested in nightlife or the social scene, don’t assume Mykonos needs to be included simply because it’s famous. There are plenty of other Greek islands that may suit you better.

Paros: For a Little of Everything

Paros is one of our favorite alternatives for couples who want beautiful scenery and great restaurants without quite the same intensity as Mykonos.

The island combines beaches, picturesque villages and a sophisticated but relaxed atmosphere.

Naoussa is particularly appealing in the evenings, when waterfront restaurants and narrow lanes come alive.

Paros works beautifully for couples who want some activity while still feeling like they’re on a relaxing island honeymoon.

Naxos: For Beaches and a More Relaxed Pace

If long beach days and authentic Greek island life are high on your list, consider Naxos.

It’s the largest of the Cyclades islands and offers beautiful beaches, traditional mountain villages, excellent local food and plenty of room to explore.

Naxos generally feels more relaxed than Santorini or Mykonos, making it a wonderful choice for couples who don’t need their honeymoon to revolve around nightlife or luxury shopping.

It’s also a good reminder that some of Greece’s best honeymoon experiences can happen away from its most famous islands.

Crete: For Couples Who Want More to Explore

Crete is almost a vacation unto itself.

Greece’s largest island offers beaches, mountains, historic sites, charming towns, wineries and wonderful food.

It’s particularly appealing to couples who like a little adventure with their relaxation.

Because Crete is so large, we’d recommend giving it enough time rather than treating it as another quick island stop. Depending on the length of your honeymoon, Crete could even become the centerpiece of the entire trip.

Milos: For Scenery and Something Different

Milos has become increasingly popular with honeymooners, and it’s easy to understand why.

Its unusual coastline, colorful fishing villages and beautiful swimming spots create a completely different landscape from what many travelers associate with Greece.

It’s particularly appealing for couples who enjoy boating, beaches and exploring.

A day on the water is one of the best ways to experience Milos and can easily become one of the highlights of a honeymoon.

Don't Choose Islands Based Only on Instagram

Beautiful photographs are wonderful for inspiration, but they don’t tell you what staying somewhere actually feels like.

A spectacular hotel may be isolated.

A famous beach may be packed during the summer.

A charming village may require considerable walking and stairs.

And an island that looks wonderfully peaceful in an April photograph may feel entirely different in August.

When we recommend islands, we consider the complete experience—not simply how they look in photographs.

Your Hotel Is Especially Important on a Honeymoon

On some vacations, a hotel is simply somewhere to sleep.

We don’t think that’s true on a honeymoon.

Your hotel can become one of the most memorable parts of the trip, so this is an area where we often recommend spending a little more if the budget allows.

Depending on the island, that might mean:

A caldera-view suite
A private plunge pool
A beachfront resort
An adults-only property
A boutique hotel within walking distance of restaurants
A secluded hideaway away from the crowds

Location matters just as much as the room itself.

That spectacular hotel won’t feel quite as wonderful if you’re spending an hour each way getting to everything you want to experience.

Splurge Where It Matters Most

You don’t necessarily need the most expensive room on every island.

One of our favorite honeymoon-planning strategies is deciding where the splurge will have the biggest impact.

Perhaps that’s a private-pool suite in Santorini for three nights, followed by a more moderately priced beachfront hotel elsewhere.

Or maybe you’d rather spend less on accommodations and put more of your budget toward a private sailing excursion, exceptional restaurants and experiences.

There’s no correct formula. The goal is to spend money on the things the two of you will value most.

Plan a Few Unforgettable Experiences

A honeymoon deserves a few moments that feel truly special.

In Greece, those might include:

A private sunset sailing excursion
A day aboard your own boat
A winery experience in Santorini
A private dinner overlooking the sea
A Greek cooking class
A couples massage
A private island tour
A beach picnic
A professional honeymoon photography session

We don’t recommend scheduling something elaborate every day.

Choose a few standout experiences and leave room for spontaneity.

Sometimes your favorite honeymoon memory ends up being the afternoon when you had absolutely nothing planned.

Give Yourselves Time to Be Newlyweds

This sounds obvious, but it’s surprisingly easy to forget during the planning process.

You’ve just finished months of wedding planning. The last thing you need is a honeymoon that starts at 7:00 every morning with another tour.

Sleep late.

Order breakfast.

Spend three hours by the pool.

Have lunch at 3:00.

Watch the sunset without worrying about what’s next.

Greece is exceptionally well suited to this kind of travel. Take advantage of it.

Consider When You Travel

For Greek island honeymoons, June and September are two of our favorite months.

You’ll generally have beautiful weather and an active island atmosphere while avoiding some of the intensity of July and August.

May can also be wonderful, particularly later in the month.

If you’re considering an early-spring or late-fall honeymoon, the itinerary needs to be planned more carefully because island hotels, restaurants, ferries and activities can operate seasonally.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Many Islands Should You Visit?

For most honeymoons, less is more.

If you have around 10 nights, two islands plus Athens can create a wonderful itinerary.

With two weeks, you can comfortably add another destination or simply spend longer in the places you’ve chosen.

The goal isn’t to return home saying, “We visited five Greek islands.”

It’s to return home remembering what you did on them.

A Sample Greek Island Honeymoon

There are countless combinations, but a first Greek honeymoon might look something like:

Athens – 2 nights

Ease into your trip with ancient history, excellent dining and your first taste of Greece.

Santorini – 3 nights

Splurge on the view, enjoy a sunset sailing experience and leave plenty of time for your hotel.

Paros or Naxos – 4 nights

For a longer honeymoon, we might add Milos, Crete or another island based on your interests.
