Why Costa Rica Is an Incredible Honeymoon Destination
Some couples picture a honeymoon as a week on a beautiful beach.
Others want adventure, wildlife, and places they have never experienced before.
Costa Rica lets you have both.
You can wake to views of a volcano, walk through the rainforest, soak in natural hot springs and then finish your honeymoon at a beautiful Pacific resort with nowhere you need to be.
That contrast is what makes Costa Rica such an interesting honeymoon destination.
It isn’t simply romantic because it is tropical. It allows couples to experience something together while still leaving plenty of room for relaxation.
For honeymooners who want more than a traditional fly-and-flop beach vacation, Costa Rica deserves serious consideration.
A Costa Rica Honeymoon Can Be as Active—or Relaxed—as You Want
One of the best things about Costa Rica is its flexibility.
An adventurous couple can fill their days with hiking, zip lining, rafting, surfing, and wildlife excursions.
Another couple might prefer leisurely nature walks, spa treatments, hot springs and several quiet days at the beach.
Most honeymooners fall somewhere in between.
We generally like to build the more active experiences into the first part of the honeymoon and allow the trip to become progressively more relaxed.
After months of wedding planning, finishing with several unscheduled days at a beautiful resort can feel particularly good.
Arenal Creates a Memorable Beginning
For many honeymooners, Arenal is an excellent place to start.
The landscape immediately feels different from a traditional beach destination. Lush vegetation surrounds the region, and when the clouds cooperate, Arenal Volcano creates a dramatic backdrop.
Couples can hike, walk across hanging bridges, visit waterfalls, zip line or explore the rainforest with a naturalist guide.
Then there are the hot springs.
After an active day, soaking in warm geothermal pools surrounded by tropical vegetation is about as appropriate for a honeymoon as an adventure destination gets.
Several properties in the area incorporate hot springs, beautiful gardens, and volcano views into the resort experience, which means you don’t necessarily need to leave the hotel every day.
Arenal gives the honeymoon a sense of adventure without requiring couples to sacrifice comfort.
Then Slow Down at the Pacific
After several days inland, the Pacific coast provides a natural change of pace.
For couples looking for a more polished resort experience, Guanacaste and the Papagayo area are among the first places we consider.
This is where Costa Rica can begin to feel more like a classic tropical honeymoon.
Spend the day by the pool. Go to the beach. Book a spa treatment. Take a sunset cruise. Have dinner without needing to be anywhere afterward.
The contrast with Arenal is part of what makes the combination work so well.
You haven’t flown all the way to Costa Rica just to sit at a resort—but by the time you reach the beach, you may be very happy to do exactly that.
Or Choose a More Natural Beach Experience
Not every honeymooner wants a large luxury resort.
Couples who prefer wildlife and a more natural setting might be drawn toward Manuel Antonio or farther south along the Pacific coast.
Manuel Antonio combines beaches with rainforest and wildlife, giving couples the opportunity to see monkeys, sloths and tropical birds without giving up the coast.
The Osa Peninsula takes the nature experience much further.
Remote, biodiverse and considerably less resort-oriented, the Osa can be extraordinary for couples who view wildlife and wilderness as part of the romance.
It isn’t right for everyone.
But for the couple who would rather wake to the sounds of the rainforest than order room service from a large beach resort, it may be exactly right.
Costa Rica Is Made for Shared Experiences
There is something particularly memorable about doing something new together on a honeymoon.
Maybe it is your first time zip lining through a forest canopy.
Perhaps you spot a sloth during a guided nature walk or stand beneath a waterfall after a hike.
You might learn to surf, cross a suspension bridge high above the forest floor or watch the sunset from a boat on the Pacific.
These aren’t simply sightseeing stops.
They become stories you share afterward.
And that is one of the reasons we think Costa Rica works particularly well for honeymooners.
The trip creates natural opportunities to do things together, not just visit beautiful places.
Wildlife Adds an Element You Can't Schedule Perfectly
Costa Rica is home to extraordinary biodiversity.
Depending on where and when you travel, you may encounter monkeys, sloths, toucans, sea turtles, whales and an enormous variety of other wildlife.
But wildlife doesn’t work from an itinerary.
You cannot guarantee that a sloth will be perfectly positioned beside the trail at 10:15 Tuesday morning.
That’s part of the experience.
A knowledgeable naturalist guide can dramatically improve your chances of spotting animals and understanding what you’re seeing.
For honeymooners who care about wildlife, we would rather arrange one or two excellent guided experiences than pack every day with tours.
Leave some room for unexpected encounters too.
The Hotels Can Be Romantic Without Feeling Generic
Costa Rica offers an appealing range of honeymoon accommodations.
There are sophisticated beachfront resorts, intimate rainforest lodges, wellness-focused retreats and properties where the surrounding landscape is every bit as important as the room.
For us, romance isn’t simply a bottle of sparkling wine and rose petals on the bed.
It might be a private plunge pool overlooking tropical vegetation.
A balcony facing Arenal Volcano.
An outdoor shower surrounded by rainforest.
A secluded beach.
Or a resort where you can spend an entire afternoon together without feeling the need to leave.
The right honeymoon hotel should enhance the destination rather than isolate you from it.
Costa Rica Works Particularly Well for Couples Who Want Variety
Some honeymoon destinations are best experienced from one resort.
Costa Rica isn’t necessarily one of them.
Moving between two carefully selected regions can make the honeymoon feel much more varied without making it hectic.
A simple combination might be:
Arenal + Guanacaste
This gives you rainforest, volcano, adventure and hot springs followed by beaches and resort time.
Another couple might prefer:
Arenal + Manuel Antonio
That keeps wildlife and nature at the center of the trip while still including the Pacific coast.
With more time, three regions can work—but we wouldn’t add stops simply to make the itinerary look more impressive.
On a honeymoon, fewer well-chosen places are usually better than a collection of two-night stays.
Adventure Doesn't Have to Mean Roughing It
Costa Rica is particularly good at combining outdoor experiences with comfort.
You can hike in the morning and have a spa treatment that afternoon.
You can spend the day looking for wildlife and return to a beautiful hotel for cocktails and dinner.
You can zip line through the forest and then soak in hot springs.
That makes Costa Rica appealing to couples who want adventure but don’t necessarily want an adventure honeymoon in the rugged sense of the word.
You can get dirty during the day.
You don’t have to stay dirty.
It Can Be a Good Alternative to a Traditional Island Honeymoon
For some couples, the classic honeymoon choices—Hawaii, Tahiti, Fiji or the Caribbean—are exactly right.
For others, spending the entire trip at a beach resort feels too quiet.
Costa Rica fills an interesting middle ground.
There are beautiful beaches, but the country doesn’t depend on them to make the trip worthwhile.
If weather changes your beach plans one afternoon, there may still be rainforest, wildlife, hot springs, waterfalls, food experiences or a spa to enjoy.
That variety can make the destination especially appealing to couples who want their honeymoon to feel like a genuine trip rather than simply a resort stay.
When Should You Honeymoon in Costa Rica?
For many first-time honeymooners, January through April is the easiest period to plan, particularly when combining an inland destination with the Pacific coast.
But the green season shouldn’t automatically be dismissed.
May, June and July can bring lush landscapes, fewer visitors and appealing conditions for couples who don’t mind some rain.
September and October require more careful regional planning because rainfall can be substantial on the Pacific side, while the Caribbean follows a different seasonal pattern.
The right honeymoon month depends on the itinerary—not simply the country as a whole.
How Long Should a Costa Rica Honeymoon Be?
For most couples, we would want at least seven nights.
That allows you to combine two regions without spending too much of the honeymoon moving between hotels.
With nine or ten nights, the pace becomes considerably more comfortable and a third region may become possible.
We’ll look at trip length in much more detail in Thursday’s article, How Many Days Do You Really Need in Costa Rica?
But the basic principle is simple:
Don’t spend your honeymoon constantly packing.
Don't Schedule Every Romantic Moment
It is easy to overplan a honeymoon because the trip feels important.
Costa Rica gives you dozens of tempting excursions, and suddenly every morning begins at 7:00.
We would resist that.
Plan the experiences that genuinely matter to you, but leave room for a morning when you sleep late.
Leave an afternoon open at the hot springs.
Give yourselves a day at the beach with nothing scheduled except perhaps dinner.
A honeymoon doesn’t become more memorable because every hour was accounted for.
Sometimes the luxury is having nowhere you need to be.
Is Costa Rica Right for Your Honeymoon?
Costa Rica may be a particularly good fit if you want:
- Beautiful scenery without spending the entire trip at the beach
- Wildlife and nature
- Adventure mixed with comfort
- A combination of rainforest and coast
- Boutique hotels or luxury resorts with a strong sense of place
- Experiences you can share rather than simply places you can photograph
- Enough variety that both people get something they love
It may be less appealing if your dream honeymoon is exclusively about calm turquoise water, overwater bungalows and spending every day on a pristine tropical beach.
That’s why there isn’t one honeymoon destination that is right for everyone.
What Makes a Costa Rica Honeymoon Remarkable?
It’s the contrast.
The morning you see a toucan in the rainforest and the afternoon you soak in hot springs.
The day you zip line through the trees and the evening you dress for dinner.
The first half of the honeymoon filled with experiences and the second half when you finally slow down.
Costa Rica gives couples enough adventure to make the trip memorable and enough comfort to make it feel like a honeymoon.
At Remarkable Honeymoons, we help couples find the balance between the two—choosing the right regions, hotels and experiences so the honeymoon feels exciting without becoming exhausting.
Because after planning a wedding, your honeymoon should be an adventure.
It just shouldn’t feel like work.
