The Best Time to Visit Mexico: A Month-by-Month Guide

Mexico is one of those rare destinations that can work beautifully almost any time of year.

But that doesn’t mean every month—or every part of Mexico—offers the same experience.

A December honeymoon in Los Cabos feels completely different from a July getaway to Riviera Maya. Mexico City has its own climate, while Puerto Vallarta follows another seasonal pattern altogether.

So when is the best time to visit Mexico?

For many travelers, November through April offers the most consistently appealing weather, particularly if you’re planning a beach vacation. Mexico’s general dry season runs from November through April, while May through October tends to bring more rain. But Mexico is enormous, and weather patterns vary considerably by region.

At Remarkable Honeymoons, we think the better question is: Where in Mexico do you want to go, and what kind of vacation do you want to have?

Here’s how the year unfolds.

January: Beautiful Beach Weather

January is one of the most popular months for a Mexico vacation—and for good reason.

Travelers escaping winter at home arrive to find warm temperatures and generally dry conditions in many of Mexico’s major beach destinations.

It’s an excellent time for Los Cabos, Riviera Maya, Cancun, Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit.

January is also in the heart of whale-watching season along Mexico’s Pacific coast. Humpback whales visit the waters around Bahía de Banderas, near Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit, during the winter months.

The tradeoff is demand. Holiday travelers can linger into early January, and desirable resorts may command premium rates.

Best for: Beach vacations, honeymoons, whale watching and escaping winter.

February: One of Our Favorites

February is another excellent month for Mexico.

The major beach destinations generally enjoy warm days and lower rainfall, while the temperatures are often more comfortable for exploring than they are later in spring.

This is also a wonderful month for combining relaxation with activities. Depending on your destination, you might spend one day at the beach and another exploring archaeological sites, snorkeling, sailing or visiting nearby towns.

For couples planning a winter honeymoon, February would be high on our list.

Best for: Honeymoons, romantic getaways, beaches and outdoor activities.

March: Sunshine and Spring Break

March can offer terrific weather, but where you stay becomes particularly important.

Spring break brings additional visitors to some of Mexico’s better-known resort areas. That doesn’t mean you should avoid Mexico—it simply means choosing the right resort and destination matters if you’re looking for a sophisticated or romantic atmosphere.

Adults-only resorts and smaller luxury properties can provide a completely different experience from large resorts catering to groups and families.

March is also an excellent time for sightseeing before the hottest months arrive.

Best for: Beach vacations, couples and travelers who choose their resort carefully.

April: Warm, Sunny and Increasingly Hot

April can still be a very good month for Mexico, particularly earlier in the month.

Temperatures begin climbing, and beach destinations feel decidedly summery.

Easter and Semana Santa can significantly increase domestic travel within Mexico, particularly at beaches and popular vacation destinations. If your trip overlaps with the holiday period, planning well ahead is important.

Later in April can be a nice opportunity for travelers who enjoy warm weather but want to travel before the summer rainy season becomes more established.

Best for: Warm-weather travelers, beaches and resort vacations.

May: Hotter Weather and Fewer Crowds

May is a transition month in many parts of Mexico.

Temperatures rise, humidity increases in tropical destinations, and rainfall becomes more likely as the month progresses.

The advantage?

You may find fewer travelers and better resort values than during the winter high season.

May can work especially well for couples who prioritize a beautiful resort and pool time and don’t mind hotter weather or an occasional shower.

It’s also important to remember that a rainy-season forecast doesn’t necessarily mean an entire day of rain. Tropical weather can involve sunshine for much of the day followed by a brief but intense afternoon or evening shower.

Best for: Resort value, fewer crowds and travelers comfortable with heat.

June: The Rainy Season Begins

By June, Mexico’s rainy season is underway in many regions.

In tropical destinations such as Cancun, Riviera Maya and Puerto Vallarta, you should expect greater humidity and an increased possibility of rain.

But June isn’t automatically a bad time to visit.

Rain frequently arrives in bursts rather than lasting all day, and there can still be plenty of sunshine. Resorts may also offer attractive pricing compared with the winter months.

This is where travel insurance becomes especially important, particularly for a honeymoon or other significant trip.

Best for: Value-conscious travelers and flexible resort vacations.

July: Summer Vacations and Tropical Weather

July brings hot temperatures, humidity and summer travelers.

Families are on vacation, so resorts can be busy even though it’s not Mexico’s traditional winter high season.

If you’re planning a honeymoon, we’d pay particular attention to the style of resort you choose. An adults-only property can create a very different atmosphere during the school-holiday period.

July can still deliver wonderful beach days, but we’d plan with realistic expectations about heat and afternoon rain.

Best for: Summer travelers, families and resort stays.

August: Hot, Humid and Quieter for Couples

August is generally hot throughout Mexico’s beach regions.

In tropical areas, expect humidity and the possibility of showers or thunderstorms.

For honeymooners with flexible dates, this wouldn’t usually be our first choice compared with February, March or November. But attractive resort pricing can make August worthwhile for travelers whose priority is a luxury property at a better value.

We’d also strongly recommend travel insurance and flexible planning during this part of the year.

Best for: Resort deals and travelers who aren’t bothered by tropical heat.

September: Proceed With Flexibility

September deserves special consideration.

This falls within hurricane season on both Mexico’s Caribbean and Pacific coasts. The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 through November 30, while the Eastern Pacific season runs from May 15 through November 30.

That doesn’t mean a hurricane will affect your vacation. Most travelers visiting during hurricane season will never encounter one.

But for an important trip such as a honeymoon, we’d want clients to understand the risk and protect their investment appropriately.

September can also bring excellent resort values and fewer crowds.

Best for: Flexible travelers prioritizing value over predictable weather.

October: A Transitional Month

October can vary considerably depending on where you’re traveling.

Rainfall and tropical weather remain possible, particularly earlier in the month, while conditions often begin improving as Mexico moves toward the dry season.

Late October can be particularly interesting for travelers who want to combine a vacation with Mexico’s cultural traditions leading into Día de Muertos.

For a beach honeymoon where weather is the overriding priority, we’d generally prefer November. For travelers interested in culture, food and experiencing Mexico beyond the resort, October can be fascinating.

Best for: Culture, value and travelers comfortable with variable weather.

November: One of the Best Months to Visit Mexico

November is one of our favorite months for Mexico.

The rainy season begins winding down, temperatures become more comfortable, and the winter high-season crowds haven’t necessarily reached their peak.

Early November also brings Día de Muertos celebrations in many parts of Mexico—an extraordinary cultural experience when approached respectfully.

For beach travelers, November can provide an excellent balance of weather and value.

Thanksgiving week is an exception. Demand from U.S. travelers increases considerably, so we’d plan early if your dates fall over the holiday.

Best for: Honeymoons, beaches, culture and couples looking for a balance of weather and value.

December: Wonderful Weather and Holiday Demand

December brings some of Mexico’s most appealing beach weather.

The beginning of the month can be particularly attractive, falling after Thanksgiving but before the Christmas and New Year’s rush.

Once the holidays arrive, however, everything changes.

Christmas and New Year’s are among the most sought-after—and expensive—periods at Mexico’s luxury resorts. The best room categories can sell far in advance, and minimum-stay requirements are common.

If you’re dreaming of Mexico over the holidays, this is one trip we’d recommend planning very early.

Best for: Winter sun, honeymoons and holiday vacations—with advance planning.

The Best Time for Riviera Maya and Cancun

For travelers focused on the Caribbean coast, we generally favor December through April for the most dependable combination of warmth and lower rainfall.

November can also be excellent.

Summer and early fall tend to bring more humidity and rain, and the Caribbean hurricane season is an important consideration.

There’s another factor travelers sometimes overlook: sargassum, the floating seaweed that can affect Caribbean beaches. Its presence varies tremendously from year to year and even from beach to beach, so we don’t recommend choosing travel dates based on promises that a particular week will be completely free of it.

The Best Time for Los Cabos

Los Cabos has a desert climate, creating a very different environment from Mexico’s Caribbean coast.

Winter and spring are particularly popular, with warm sunny days and generally comfortable conditions.

It’s also an excellent winter choice for travelers interested in whale watching.

Summer can become extremely hot, while late summer and early fall fall within the Eastern Pacific hurricane season.

For many honeymooners, we’d look particularly closely at November through April.

The Best Time for Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit

The Pacific coast around Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit is another favorite for winter vacations.

December through April generally brings drier weather, while summer becomes hotter, wetter and more humid.

Winter also brings one of the region’s great natural experiences: humpback whales migrate to Bahía de Banderas to mate and give birth.

For couples looking for a romantic resort vacation with opportunities to explore beyond the property, this region can be a wonderful alternative to the Caribbean side of Mexico.

What About Mexico City?

Mexico isn’t only about beaches. Mexico City sits at a high elevation and has a much more temperate climate than the coastal resort areas. Spring and fall can be particularly pleasant for exploring neighborhoods, museums, restaurants and historic sites. A Mexico City trip can also pair beautifully with destinations such as San Miguel de Allende or Oaxaca for travelers who want a completely different Mexican vacation. It’s one reason we don’t like giving Mexico a single “best month.” The country offers far more variety than its beach destinations alone.

What's the Best Time for a Mexico Honeymoon?

For most couples planning a beach honeymoon, we’d start by looking at: November through early December Great weather potential before peak holiday pricing.

January through March

Excellent beach conditions, particularly for travelers escaping colder climates.

April

Warm weather and plenty of sunshine, with holiday dates requiring extra planning.

If you’re honeymooning during summer or early fall, we wouldn’t automatically rule out Mexico. Instead, we’d choose the destination and resort carefully, discuss weather expectations and make sure your travel investment is appropriately protected.

Our Favorite Time to Visit Mexico

If your schedule is completely flexible, November through March would be our first choice for many of Mexico’s major beach destinations.

But the best month isn’t necessarily the same for every traveler.

A couple who wants to see whales in Los Cabos has different priorities from someone planning a culinary trip to Mexico City. A honeymooner dreaming of Riviera Maya has different weather considerations from someone heading to Puerto Vallarta.

That’s why we always look at the destination, the season and the traveler together.
