Sicily, Our Honeymoon and One (Literal) Leap of Faith
We stood on the platform at Villa San Giovanni’s railway station, two young honeymooners freighted with luggage in their families’ ancestral home of Calabria, on the pinky toe of Italy’s boot. The train, which would carry us across the Strait of Messina to Sicily, should have been there already. Even in the Mezzogiorno (Italy’s sun-drenched southern regions), where any sense of urgency is anathema to the way of living, the trains run mostly on time.
